Extractions

At Iqaluit Dental Clinic, we do our best to save your natural teeth. We are in the business of prevention, restoration, and health. However, sometimes things happen that make extractions necessary. While we do our best to avoid them, when we have to extract a tooth, we make sure that we keep you comfortable and support you during your healing and tooth replacement process.

Extractions become necessary for a number of different reasons. From trauma to deep decay, sometimes removing your tooth will be the best way to support your health. We offer both simple and surgical extractions at our Iqaluit dental office. Our dentists will provide you with the gentle and professional care you deserve.

Simple Dental Extractions

While no extraction feels simple, some are easier than others. If your tooth is already erupted through your gums, we refer to this type of extraction as simple because it does not require an incision to remove your tooth.

As with all procedures we perform, we will make extra efforts to ensure your comfort during and after the procedure. Communication will help us know if we reached the right level of anaesthetic for you. If you want us to pause at any time, just let us know.

With simple extractions, our dentist will gently loosen the ligaments that hold your tooth in place and lift it carefully out. We will pack your extraction site with gauze to stop any bleeding and go over post-operative care so that you know what behaviours to avoid and how to promote healing.

Surgical Dental Extractions

Surgical extractions refer to extractions that require an incision on a tooth that is not erupted through your gums or that is only partially erupted. Sometimes surgical extractions take a little longer to heal, but if you follow our post-operative instructions, you should be fine and heal quickly, gradually improving each day.

When we perform a surgical extraction, it is just like a simple extraction once we make the necessary incision. We loosen your tooth from its gum tissue and gently lift it out. Often stitches are necessary with surgical extractions. We will go over how to care for your stitches at your appointment.

Tooth Replacement Options

For some extractions, like wisdom teeth (third molars), we don’t need to replace your missing teeth. We just allow you to heal naturally and monitor you to make sure all is well.
However, for other teeth, we need to talk about replacement options such as bridges or dental implants. We will describe all of your options so that you can make the decision that works best for you and your lifestyle.
